To answer your question concerning transportation...when I was younger I hitch-hiked everywhere...across the US and Canada several times...even hitch-hiked the seven miles to work everyday at one job...if it was close...within a few miles I'd walk...and I had no shortage of friends with cars and bikes to give me rides...
now...I mostly use public transportation...and cabs.
